The rocky coast of Maine.
The famous "Wedding Cake House" in Kennebunkport, Maine.
A long, deep crack in the earth's crust called The Flume, in New Hampshire.
We were fortunate to be in the New York area on September 24th, just as our second grandson, Tristan Edward Needham, was born ...
... so we took a week off to be grandparents ... see the sights ...
... go to Times Square which probably has more people passing through it in one day than we had seen since starting our trip ...
... and also go to the Statue of Liberty.
In Pennsylvania we visited the austere Ephrata Cloister founded in 1732 by German settlers seeking spiritual goals rather than earthly rewards.
In Asheville, North Carolina, we visited the Biltmore Estate, site of the largest home in America, set amongst beautiful gardens ...
Next we traveled up the beautiful Blue Ridge and Shenandoah Parkways enjoying several days of spectacular Fall colors, a couple of short hikes on the 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail ...
... the home of a mountain midwife ...
... the famous Mawbry Mill ...
... and a rugged mountaintop, also on the Appalachian Trail.
Then we moved into West Virginia and encountered our first snow.
This is a power plant in Poca, West Virginia.
We spent an afternoon in Poca in search of our roots.
In Michigan we traveled up the Lake Huron coast ...
... through a 20 mile long "Tunnel of Trees" ...
... and part way down the Lake Michigan coast.
In Lexington, Kentucky, we visited Ray's home when he was in 3rd and 4th grades.
We had a chance to visit Ronald Reagan's hometown of Dixon, Illinois, including this home where he lived when he was 9 to 12 years old.
Now we are parked in the snow alongside Ray's mother's apartment in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin ...
... where we shared a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with our extended family!
