The Mountains
Our first stop and overnight was Calveras Big Trees State Park where there is a wonderful grove of sequoias
We didn't know that the sap comes out of the trees at this time of year. Not only were our shoes caked with mud and stuff picked up by the sap, but also our trailer got a lot of sap on its roof!
From there we headed further up into the mountains, up to 8,732 feet, after disconnecting our trailer at a National Forest campground
We had always wanted to learn about Heiser Lake even though we are Heizers (with a "Z"). Here we are at the trailhead. The lake itself is about two miles down the trail from here.
We went off-road the main road for several miles to see some other lakes we had read about
Here's where we finally spent the night, on the shore of Lake Alpine.
The next day we headed noth along Route 49, named after the 1849 Gold Rush in the area. Here is some of the equipment early miners used
We spent the night in another National Forest campground along a mountain stream. Hannelore took some time in the afternoon to make Amish Friendship Bread, which takes several days in total!
We stopped in this town to buy groceries.
Fortunately we read these signs before it was too late to back up and turn around!
We happened to cross the Pacific Crest Trail about noon so we stopped for lunch and a short hike
