2009 Vietnam Tour
From Nha Trang we traveled by bus 5,000 feet up into the mountains to Dalat, a popular summer area away from the heat and humidity of the low lands. We spent two nights there. These photos were taken as we traveled through the mountains.
As we neared Dalat, we encountered lots of farming, huge green houses, and some controlled burns in the mountains.
In Dalat we took a cable car to visit a monastery!
We also had the opportunity to have dinner in the home of a local family ...
... and see their traditional shirine to their ancestors, as is found in most homes in Vietnam. The eye is the symbol of the Cao Dai religion which we learned more about a few days later.
The next day we went to visit the countryside around Dalat, starting with a greenhouse ...
... then seeing coffee beans drying all over the place ...
... a cricket farm! ...
... where some of our group were brave enought to sample fried crickets! ...
... a factory that process silk cocoons all the way to finished scarves ...
... and finally, via a tractor-drawn wagon, to an out of the way village where coffe beans are grown
The village has a Christian church that is also used as the school
We were able to tour some of the homes and see how the people live. The people of this village are descendants of Polynesians and therefore have darker skin than most Vietnamese
Returning to Dalat, we toured a controvesial "Crazy House" built by a well-connected woman architect ...
... a large flower garden park ...
... some of the old estates left over from the French colonial period ...
... and finally a dance performance by some of the tribal people from the area
... which included drinking rice wine ...
