Stage 3: Poland, Czech Republic and Slovak Republic
We got up a the crack of dawn in Vilnius and flew to Warsaw, the capitol of Poland, to save a day-long bus ride.
By 9 a.m. we were in downtown Warsaw with a full day ahead of us.
As we wandered, we met these Dutch gals, ...
... international tourists at the feet of Copernicus, ...
... and had the sad privilege of visiting the square where the public mourining of the recent death of the Polish leader and so many others in a plane crash had taken place. There was a very informative photo exhibition and people were still coming with memorials.
Lunch in the Old Town, consulting our iPad to navigate the area.
This young lad, singing classical songs for coins, had an incredible voice.
We spent a fair amount of time in the area of the former Warsaw ghetto during World War II where so many Jews died. This map shows the extent of the walled off area.
Our plan was to take an ovenight train to Prague. We chatted wih this very pleansant Bulgarian lawyer while we waited.
About 7:30 a.m. the next morning, we were in Prague, the capitol of the Czech Republic.
We left our day packs at a hotel for later check in, and set off to see the town.
We happened to arrive at a famous clock just before noon where thousands of tourists had gathered to see a display of moving religious figures in the small windows just above the clock face.

In addition to the castle, we encountered several strange characters on the other side of the river.
The next morning we took a train to Bratislava, the capitol of the Slavak Republic, where we stopped for four hours.
We then continued on by train to Budapest, Hungary, to spend the night before flying to the Ukraine then next morning, saving a deeper look at Budapest for our return from the Ukraine.
